Johansen Sound Therapy

Johansen Sound Therapy is a form of Sound Therapy or Auditory Integration Therapy. The programme involves listening to a series of specially recorded music CDs for 10 - 15 minutes per day. This music is easy to listen to and is specially designed to stimulate nerve pathways into and inside the brain. It’s often customised to the specific needs of individual clients.

With this therapy, concentration, listening and understanding of language are improved because incoming information is dealt with more quickly and efficiently. This means improvements in reading and spelling skills are also often seen. The CDs can be listened through headphones on a personal stereo at any time of the day.

A typical programme is completed in 9 months and during this time, all our clients are fully supported by us and the music cd's are fine tuned as changes take place.

Suitable age groups for Sound Therapy

Children, teenagers and adults can all benefit from Johansen Sound Therapy. Children as young as three years old have successfully followed the programme and adults have also benefited, although for older individuals, the programme may take longer to complete than for younger people.

Young children

Johansen Sound Therapy helps individuals to hear sounds more accurately and efficiently. For young children with speech that is difficult to understand, it can increase their ability to improve the accuracy of their speech sound production and works very well alongside any speech and language therapy they may be receiving. Children who have difficulty in understanding what is said to them, or in expressing themselves effectively can also benefit greatly from JST.

School age children

Johansen Sound therapy improves auditory processing efficiency. Children who find it difficult to follow instructions, do not seem to listen to what is being said to them, or who need extra time to respond to a question, may have a problem with auditory processing. Johansen Sound Therapy can improve these underlying difficulties which may be part of the cause of their difficulty with understanding.

This may include children with speech problems, including specific language impairment, Dyspraxia, ADHD or Dyslexia. Sound therapy can also be very helpful for children with expressive language difficulties and with speech sound difficulties. It can also be helpful for children on the autistic spectrum.

Children who had reading and spelling problems often find it easier to analyse the sound structure of words after listening to Johansen Sound Therapy music. When it is combined with well targeted teaching, this can help their literacy skills significantly.

Adults

Johansen Sound Therapy has not yet been used with adults as widely as with children. Those who have been through a programme have reported improvements with processing incoming auditory information as well as with their reading and spelling. At the Time for a Change Practice, we have worked with adults and are seeing very good results.

We always start with an assessment

Johansen Sound Therapy is not a magical solution to all a child's problems. It’s important that children are assessed prior to starting on the programme to ensure that Sound Therapy is an appropriate approach for their particular challenges. For a small minority of children with language difficulties, Sound Therapy may not work. However, in our experience, there are very few people who will not gain at least some benefit from it.

For the vast majority though, who at the assessment are identified as being likely to be helped, it can make a very great difference.

Make sure you have a fully qualified Sound Therapy Practitioner

It’s really important you have a fully qualified Johansen Sound Therapy practitioner delivering and monitoring the implementation of your programme. Jo Sheridan is a fully qualified and very experienced practitioner and is one of only 11 qualified Johansen Sound Therapy Practitioners based in Ireland.

If you would like to more information or would find it useful to talk through the specific experiences or challenges you or someone close to you may have, Jo would be happy to talk this through with you
